Warren G. Harding was born on November 2, 1865, in Corsica, Ohio (now Blooming Grove, Ohio). He died of a cerebral hemorrhage or coronary thrombosis on August 2, 1923, in San Francisco, California. Harding was president from March 4, 1921, until August 2, 1923, when he was succeeded by Calvin Coolidge after Hardingâs unexpected death. In the 1920 election, the Republican ticket of Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge beat the Democratic ticket of James Cox and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Harding won more than 16 million votes compared to Coxâs 9 million with an Electoral College split of 404 to 127. Harding carried the majority of the country with the exception of the southern states. The only southern states he carried were Tennessee and Oklahoma.
Harding married Florence Mabel Kling on July 8, 1891. She was previously married to Henry Atherton DeWolfe with whom she had a son, Marshall Eugene DeWolfe in 1880. Marshall died in 1915, and his children Eugenia and George DeWolfe were Florenceâs heirs at her death in 1924. During the 1920 presidential campaign, reporters believed Florenceâs first marriage ended with her husbandâs death and not a divorce. After she assumed the role as first lady, neither her son nor her previous marriage was commented upon publicly. The Hardings had no children together, and until 2015, his descendants were only speculative. By several accounts, Harding had an active love life that did not include his wife. The most well known and documented of his relationships were with Carrie Fulton Phillips and Nan Britton. Britton published a book in 1927 entitled The Presidentâs Daughter, where she alleged that her daughter, Elizabeth, was the biological daughter of Harding. Elizabeth never pursued notoriety and refused all interviews throughout her adult life. After her death in 2015, it was revealed that members of the extended Harding family contacted Elizabethâs children. DNA testing confirmed they were genetically related to each other, thus finally confirming Brittonâs claims that Harding fathered her daughter.
The Harding administration is unusual because almost the entire balance of scandal and strife emerged following his death. Scholars routinely regard the administration as one of the most plagued and corrupt in American history, but almost all these critiques did not occur in his lifetime. There were rumors, but they were not rampant. At his death, Harding was poised to take his place among the most beloved of American presidents. The lack of active scandal during his presidency almost certainly stems from his professional background. Harding and his wife both came from newspaper backgrounds and ran the Marion Star; she was more of the business person and the newspaper thrived under her direction. Harding, by many accounts, was affable, good-natured, and had a friendly relationship with politicians from both parties in the area.
